Are vineyards an attractive investment option?

Although wine has been part of different cultures for centuries, the growing consumer concern about the quality and origin of food, as well as a greater preference for a balanced diet, has increased its value in recent years. The popularity of the Mediterranean diet, in which wine plays a role in contributing to a healthy lifestyle, has consolidated its presence on tables worldwide.

Spain has the largest vineyard in the world, with more than 945,000 hectares of surface area. Castilla-La Mancha (+451,000 ha), Extremadura (+83,000 ha), Castilla y León (+76,000 ha), Comunidad Valenciana (+63,000 ha), Cataluña (+57,000 ha), and La Rioja (+53,000 ha) stand out as the main producing regions.

The versatility of wine, its healthy properties, and its gastronomic relevance have made it an increasingly attractive investment option. In addition, the demand for premium wines, especially those from well-managed vineyards, has driven the emergence of new buying and selling opportunities in the vineyard market.

In Spain, vineyard sale options were found with an average price of 16,795 euros per hectare in 2022, according to the latest data available until November 2024 from the Ministry of Agriculture.

However, this figure varied depending on whether the crops were dryland (14,358 euros per hectare) or irrigated (24,511 euros per hectare). It also depended on whether the grapes were intended for winemaking (14,365 euros per hectare for dryland) or for direct consumption (table grapes).

How many years does a grapevine live?

The vine has an average lifespan of approximately 50 years. However, vines over 100 years old can also be found.

From the time of planting, the vine requires between 3 to 5 years to start producing quality grapes. From 10 years to 30 years, it reaches its optimal production period.

What type of soil does a vineyard need?

The soil plays a fundamental role in wine production, as it provides the essential elements for the growth of the crop. Therefore, if you are involved in a process of buying and selling vineyards, an aspect to consider is the soil.

For the correct development of the vine, vineyards require deep soils, good drainage, and the ability to retain water adequately. Also, it is preferable that they have a pH between 6.0 and 7.5 and be well exposed to sunlight. Another relevant aspect is the texture, highlighting sandy, clay, stony, and loamy soils.
