Orange groves for sale in Spain

The cultivation of orange trees in Spain has a long historical tradition, as it has been present in the Iberian Peninsula since the Islamic era. Currently, Spain is the top producer of orange trees in the European Union and the sixth in the world, behind countries such as the United States, India, China, Mexico, and Iran. Spanish oranges are highly valued in international markets, which has made Spain the world’s leading exporter of this citrus. The cultivation of orange trees plays a fundamental role in Spain's agricultural economy, with more than 149,000 hectares dedicated to it, representing 48.6% of the total citrus fruit area in Spain.

This leadership in the production and export of oranges makes investing in an orange farm an opportunity.

The main regions where orange farms can be found in Spain are the Valencian Community, especially the province of Valencia, which has an area of 71,418 hectares dedicated to this crop, according to the Survey on Surface Areas and Crop Yields (ESYRCE) of 2023.

According to this survey, other relevant areas are Andalusia (65,002 ha), the Region of Murcia (9,441 ha), and Catalonia (1,845 ha).

Farms can also be found in the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Galicia, and Extremadura.

The price of orange farms for sale is determined by several factors. The first of these is location, so farms located in areas with higher demand, such as the Valencian Community, the Region of Murcia, and Andalusia, and with good accessibility, may have a higher price.

Other factors such as the size of the farm, the demand for this type of property in the market, and the condition of the property also influence its value.

The most commonly cultivated varieties in these farms are Salustiana, Navel, Verna, and Valenciana Late.

Salustiana orange. A high-productivity variety mainly cultivated in the Valencian Community and Andalusia (provinces of Córdoba and Seville).

Navel orange. They are characterized by having a short production cycle compared to other varieties. Its cultivation is especially found in Andalusia (province of Almería) and the Valencian Community.

Verna orange. It stands out for its good performance under adverse conditions. It is mainly cultivated in Andalusia, the Region of Murcia, and the Balearic Islands.

Valenciana Late orange. It has a high resistance to climatic conditions and its cultivation is concentrated in Andalusia (provinces of Huelva and Córdoba), the Valencian Community, and the Region of Murcia.

The orange tree begins to produce fruit from 3 years after planting. This tree can be in full production for 15 years, and starts to lose productivity from 40 years onwards.

The best soil for optimal production in orange farms is loamy-sandy, composed of silica sand with some clay and lime. It should be light to medium textured soil, meaning it should not be excessively sandy, deep, and with good drainage, allowing water to pass through without causing waterlogging. Additionally, its pH should be between 5.5 and 6.5.

Since the orange tree is sensitive to salts, it is advisable to avoid an orange farm with soil that has high salinity.
