What role do these farms play in Spanish agriculture?

Spain is the country with the largest irrigated area in the European Union and the world leader in localized irrigation. Irrigated farms account for 23% of the country's cultivated area, with 3.7 million hectares, and play a key role in agricultural activity. Andalusia, Castilla y León, Aragón, and Castilla-La Mancha are the regions with the most of these lands, from which 65% of the vegetable production is obtained.

Irrigated land has enabled Spain to become one of the largest exporters of fresh agricultural products in Europe. Cereals, fruits such as citrus, almonds, and pistachios, vegetables, olives, and vines are products mostly cultivated using irrigation, and they account for a significant part of Spain's exports.

Given the potential of irrigated farms, at Cocampo, through our ad platform, we offer a wide selection of irrigated land in terms of sizes and prices.

What is the price per hectare of irrigated farms?

According to the latest available data from the Ministry of Agriculture, for the year 2022, the price per hectare of irrigated land is 29,944 euros. From 2016 to 2022, these farms have increased in value by 7.4%, which translates to 2,058 euros more per hectare.

However, there are differences in prices depending on the crop. For example, greenhouses have the highest price per hectare, reaching 241,418 euros. On the other hand, herbaceous crops have the lowest price per hectare, with 18,215 euros.

What types of crops can be planted on an irrigated farm?

On an irrigated farm, crops such as cereals (barley, maize, wheat, rice), potatoes, industrial crops (sunflower, sugar beet...) and vegetables can be grown.

Similarly, citrus fruits (orange, lemon, mandarin), nut trees (almond, pistachio) and subtropical fruits (avocado, persimmon, mango, banana, etc.). Finally, woody crops such as olive trees (table olives and for oil production) or vineyards (grapes for consumption or winemaking) stand out.

Is it profitable to invest in irrigated land?

An irrigated land achieves higher production compared to those that rely solely on water from precipitation. The more controlled water supply provided by irrigation systems can lead to an increase in production, as well as greater profitability.

Irregular farms are usually in higher demand in the market due to their potential for higher production. This drives their appreciation over time and makes them an attractive investment for existing investor profiles. Therefore, if the irrigated farm is put up for sale in the future, it could fetch a price higher than the acquisition value.

Lastly, crops grown with irrigation, as they do not rely on precipitation, are particularly important in the current context of global population growth and long periods of drought due to climate change. FAO (the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization) estimates that production will need to increase by over 50% by 2050 to meet global food demands.
