Why invest in avocado farms?

The demand for this crop has increased recently, not only in Spain but also globally. Changes in consumer eating habits, with more and more people opting for a balanced and healthy diet, have boosted the demand for so-called "superfoods," among which avocado is included. Thanks to its nutritional properties and numerous health benefits, this product has gained popularity in today's gastronomy.

Within the European Union, Spain is the leading producer, and globally it ranks eighth. The climatic conditions in some geographical areas of the country, ideal for planting, have driven its cultivation. Currently, the avocado-growing area reaches 24,000 hectares, a figure that is expected to continue growing. For this reason, it is a crop that offers a high return on investment.

Moreover, the avocado tree is a plant that, when properly cared for, can be productive for decades (between 10 and 20 years). Unlike other fruit trees, it does not require frequent pruning and is more resistant to pests and diseases.

What characteristics should an avocado farm have to be profitable?

For an avocado farm to be profitable, it must meet a series of requirements, especially in terms of soil type, climate, water access, and planting framework.

Although avocado is a crop that can adapt to different soil types, it is important that its clay content is less than 28%. The most recommended types are sandy and loamy-sandy soils. Additionally, the soil must have good structure and drainage, and be rich in organic matter.

Regarding the climate, avocado is a crop that requires a warm climate, with temperatures between 17ºC and 24ºC, with the ideal being 20ºC, and a maximum temperature of 30ºC. Furthermore, it is a water-demanding crop, so a constant water supply is necessary, either through rainfall or irrigation. However, soil waterlogging should always be avoided, as avocado trees are also sensitive to excess water.

Finally, attention should be paid to the cultivation system. If a traditional system is chosen for the avocado farm, the planting framework is 8x8 meters, meaning fewer trees per hectare. When choosing the intensive system, the planting framework is 4x2 meters, allowing for higher planting density.

Where can avocado farms be found?

Avocado farms are located in the areas where their cultivation takes place. According to the most recent Survey on Crop Areas and Yields (ESYRCE) for the year 2023, these regions are Andalusia, with 18,659 hectares, Valencia Community (3,685 ha), Canary Islands (1,237 ha), Balearic Islands (114 ha), Galicia (45 ha), Catalonia (6 ha), and Murcia Region (6 ha).

How important is location when evaluating avocado farms for sale?

Location is an important factor to consider when looking for avocado farms for sale due to the climate and water requirements of this crop. Ideally, the farm should be located in a warm climate area where there are no prolonged frosts and with moderate rainfall.

Also, the avocado farm should be located near water resources due to its high water demand.
